Hello. My name is Conrad van den Berg and I’m organising Lake Gariep Run. I have been a runner for around 40 years: road, trail, and cross country. I have served in running club administration and filled various roles in race organisation. I keep a running blog.
Over many years my family and I have holidayed on the farm Schalkwykskraal, owned by my sister Carina van der Walt and her husband Meyer. The farmhouse looks out on Oviston Nature Reserve and the Gariep Dam; a beautiful setting. I have enjoyed many a run in the koppies on the farm and on the plains in the reserve, for a combination of physical challenge and stunning views. The runs were mostly solitary and I wished to share them with more people…
It took about three years from the time I first raised the idea of hosting a race with Meyer and Carina until we took the “let’s do it” decision in December 2019, with the date of the inaugural run set for 1 May 2021.
Schalk and Christa van der Walt kindly permitted us to include their farm Gelykfontein. Their daughter Marené van der Walt handles the practical issues for us.
Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency allows us to run through Oviston Nature Reserve.
Meyer suggested the routes. Carina runs the venue. Together they will ensure that you find everything in order.
Johan Raath from Adventure Medics, whom I have known for years from trail running, will provide the medical backup which gives me great comfort.
I’m supported by my wife Penny. She is painting the mementos that finishers of the inaugural race will receive.
